It’s basically a smorgasbord with a few dishes that is only available during christmas. The julbord is available in many restaurants in Sweden from the end of november until christmas eve. Other popular dishes are meatballs (köttbullar), pickled herring (sill), prinskorv (literary prince sausage, a small sausage), apple sauce (äppelmos) for the Christmas ham, raw spiced salmon (gravlax), simmered red cabbage (rödkål), brussel sprouts (brysselkål), Janssons frestelse, and potatoes. Now these Christmas Candies are pretty much obligatory in Swedish households during Christmas, which is why my sister and I both have grown up eating, and making, them around Christmas.
